10 – must-try tropical fruits in Vietnam

Durian
A durian is a big fruit with a strong smell and a hard shell with sharp thorns. Its flavour is loved by some people, especially in Southeast Asia, where people name it "King of Fruits". Durian fruit has a very high nutrient content compared to most other fruits. In durian fruit contains potassium, fiber, iron and vitamin B, etc. and high antioxidant content.
Longan
Originating in Southeast Asia, the longan fruit (Dimocarpus longan) can easily be mistaken for its popular cousin, the lychee (via Growables). They're in the same family, along with rambutan and akee. Longans are roughly the size of a large grape, with sweet white flesh surrounded by tough, tan, leathery skin. They grow in clusters on large evergreen trees and have a sweet, musky flavor.

Rambutan
Rambutan fruit has long been recognized as the "golden" fruit of Vietnamese agriculture, not only brings high nutritional value, but also provides good economic efficiency for growers. This fruit, with a hairy outer shell, appears in two colors - red and yellow, and has a quite sweet and slightly sour flavor. Rambutan is also considered one of the signature summertime fruits that tourists must try when they come to Vietnam.
 

Sapota (Sapodilla)
Being imported to Vietnam from Central America a long time ago, sapodilla has become quite popular nowadays in the recent 20 years. This fruit is grown mostly in northern Vietnam, with the shape of an egg and brownish skin. When ripe, the brown and yellow pulp is very juicy and has a molasses-like taste.

Lychee
Vietnamese lychees are described as small rounded fruit with white translucent flesh, pleasant smell and rough thin skin. Since lychees were cultivated in Vietnam more than a thousand year ago, lychees are always one of the favorite fruits among locals. They fall for its sweetness with hint of grape and pear favors. Season of lychee last for 3 months from May till end of July and it is best served in June.

Mangosteen
Easily one of the most exotic fruits you will taste in Vietnam, mangosteen is only in season from May until August. Even the Vietnamese get excited for mangosten season. With thick purple rind, and soft, tangy flesh, mangosteens are easy to find in supermarkets and street-side vendors all over Vietnam.

Starfruit
The starfruit is a native fruit of South-East Asia. The fruit has a distinct taste and is often used in cooking. When sliced cross-wise, the pieces look like five distinct-angled stars. Consequently, the fruit is a must in certain Vietnamese dishes as garnishes. The fruit can be eaten raw or cooked.

Dragon Fruit
Vietnam’s dragon fruit (also known as pitaya) is a popular fruit commonly grown throughout tropical countries and subtropical world regions, notably Southeast Asia. The dragon fruit is known for its unique pink scaly spike exterior, charismatic aroma, crispy texture flesh with a sweet taste. The dragonfruit has been cultivated for 2 centuries, but it only just been brought to the market in the 1980s.

Custard Apple
Custard apple, called mãng cầu xiêm in South Vietnam, na in North Vietnam, is delicious and very nutritious, perfect for eating every day. Custard apples have pale green skin with large bumps. They are heart-shaped fruit, with soft white flesh and large, shiny black seeds.
 

Star Apple
The Vietnamese name for star apple translates to mothers’ milk, and is connected to an old folktale. This spherical fruit is roughly the size of an orange, with tight, shiny skin in shades of violet or green. The skin and rind are bitter, but the fruit inside is white with a mellow taste.
